Saturday night marks a genuine first in combat sports: Netflix’s debut as a live MMA broadcaster. MVP MMA 1 is promoted by Most Valuable Promotions, the company founded by Jake Paul in 2021 that has already produced countless boxing events. After the Paul vs. Mike Tyson card that did numbers on Netflix, MVP is now expanding into MMA with a lineup packed with recognizable names from across the sport – mostly hailing from the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which isn’t affiliated with this event.
The main event is a bout between former UFC superstar Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano, two fighters often credited with helping bring women’s MMA into the mainstream. Rousey hasn’t participated in an MMA fight since her loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 in December 2016, while Carano hasn’t competed since facing Cris Cyborg in Strikeforce in 2009.
As for the rest of the card, Nate Diaz returns to the cage for the first time since defeating Tony Ferguson at UFC 279 in 2022, while former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou makes another MMA appearance following his high-profile boxing crossover and 2024 PFL title run.
All 11 bouts are sanctioned under the Unified Rules of MMA with 4-ounce gloves inside a hexagonal cage rather than an octagon.
