The Detroit Tigers (38-49) and Texas Rangers (44-43) meet for the second time this season, this time in Texas, to open a three-game series at Globe Life Field on Thursday night. The Tigers got the better of the Rangers earlier this year in Detroit, winning that series 2-1.

The Tigers reached the ALDS last postseason but enter Thursday in fourth place in the AL Central and 11 games below .500. However, things may be starting to turn around for Detroit. The Tigers are 16-11 since June 1, are coming off a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees, and have welcomed reigning back-to-back American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal back to the rotation after he missed more than a month with an injury.

The Rangers are looking to snap a two-year playoff drought after missing the postseason in each of the past two seasons following their 2023 World Series title. Texas enters Thursday in first place in the AL West and, despite dropping Wednesday’s series finale to Cleveland, has won six of its last seven games.

Thursday night’s opener features two veteran pitchers capable of shutting down opposing lineups. Left-hander Framber Valdez is scheduled to start for the Tigers, while right-hander Nathan Eovaldi gets the ball for the Rangers.

Rangers vs. Tigers Best Bet: Kerry Carpenter Over 0.5 Hits

Kerry Carpenter is batting just .238 this season, but the Tigers outfielder has started to heat up at the plate. The left-handed hitter enters Thursday riding a six-game hitting streak that includes two multi-hit performances. He has also homered in three of those games.

Carpenter will face Nathan Eovaldi, who has allowed a .255 batting average to left-handed hitters this season. Notably, 10 of the 17 home runs Eovaldi has surrendered have come against lefties. Although Eovaldi is coming off an excellent outing in which he threw seven scoreless innings, he still allowed 33 hits across his five June starts, an average of 6.6 hits per outing.
