The Dallas Stars will look to seize control of the series as they travel to Grand Casino Arena for Game 3 against the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday night. The best-of-7 series is knotted at one game apiece after a dramatic split in Dallas, and now the scene shifts to St. Paul for the first playoff hockey in Minnesota this spring.

The Wild dominated the opener, hammering the Stars 6-1 behind a four-point explosion from the top of their lineup. Matt Boldy and Joel Eriksson Ek each posted two goals and an assist, Kirill Kaprizov chipped in a goal and two helpers, and Mats Zuccarello dished out three assists as Minnesota’s power play went 2-for-4. Jesper Wallstedt was stellar in net, stopping 27 of 28 shots to earn the win in his first career playoff start.

Dallas responded emphatically in Game 2 with a 4-2 victory fueled by Wyatt Johnston, who scored twice – including a banked shot off the end boards that ricocheted off Wallstedt’s skate in the first period and a rolling empty-netter to seal it. Matt Duchene broke a 1-1 tie with a power-play goal in the second, and Jason Robertson added a third-period sc0re to make it 3-1 before Brock Faber briefly gave Minnesota life with his second goal of the night. Jake Oettinger was the backbone of the win, stopping 28 shots, including a point-blank look from Kaprizov on a late power play.

The biggest storyline entering Game 3 is Minnesota’s health. Zuccarello missed Game 2 with an upper-body injury sustained from a Tyler Myers elbow in the opener. Yakov Trenin left Game 2 in the first period after absorbing a heavy open-ice hit from Colin Blackwell and is day-to-day. Coach John Hynes said before leaving Dallas that he wasn’t sure whether either forward would be available Wednesday, adding that the Wild could dress 11 forwards and seven defensemen if both remain out. On the other side, Dallas center Roope Hintz remains sidelined with a lower-body injury and did not travel with the team – coach Glen Gulutzan ruled him out for Game 3 and said Game 4 is “very doubtful.”
