There’s an FBS college football game Tuesday night to kick off the Week 6 action as the Troy Trojans (2-2, 0-0 Sun Belt) host the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (1-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Alabama to open both teams’ conference schedules.
Southern Miss is in its first full year under head coach Blake Anderson after he took over for Charles Huff, who is now at Memphis, but it hasn’t been an ideal start. Huff led the Golden Eagles to a 7-5 record last season that resulted in a New Orleans Bowl appearance. However, Anderson was the head coach for that game, a 27-16 loss to Western Kentucky, and is now 1-3 to start the 2026 season.
Anderson’s first regular-season game with Southern Miss went well, with the Golden Eagles taking down Alcorn State 49-3 in Week 1, but they have since lost three consecutive games. The most recent was a road loss to Tulane on Sept. 26 in a game in which the Golden Eagles took a 21-14 lead into the fourth quarter before Tulane scored 10 unanswered points to complete the comeback.
Southern Miss kicker Creighton Wilbanks missed a 44-yard field goal and had a 21-yard attempt blocked, both in the fourth quarter, while the Golden Eagles couldn’t capitalize on a Tulane interception early in the final quarter, as they were forced to punt after a four-play drive.
Troy is in Year 3 under head coach Gerad Parker, and after an 8-6 record last season, the Trojans sit at .500 entering Tuesday. It was a good start to the new season with back-to-back wins over Sam Houston and Alabama State before a 27-17 road loss to then-No. 20 and now-No. 14 Missouri, followed by a 21-10 road loss to Utah State on Sept. 26.
The Trojans will look to get back on track and into the win column Tuesday night, and that begins with quarterback Goose Crowder. Crowder threw three interceptions in Troy’s loss to Utah State and also lost a fumble and threw an interception in the 10-point loss to Missouri a few weeks ago, so protecting the football will be key to beating Southern Miss.
The teams aren’t the same as they were a season ago, but Crowder did have some success against Southern Miss last year, completing 24 of 34 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-18 win. He did, however, throw an interception in that game.

Troy vs. Southern Miss Best Bet: Over 52.5 Points (-110)
These two teams played toward the end of last season, and while that game ended with 46 total points, there are reasons to believe Tuesday night’s Week 6 matchup can result in an offense-heavy game.
Southern Miss totaled 543 yards of offense in its dominant 49-3 win over Alcorn State in Week 1, and while the offense has been fairly solid since then, the defense hasn’t put together its best performances during this three-game losing streak. The Golden Eagles allowed 613 yards of offense and 43 points to Auburn, 436 yards and 48 points to UConn, and 445 yards and 24 points in their most recent game against Tulane.
Not only are the Golden Eagles allowing a ton of yards, but they’re also giving up plenty of rushing yards this season. Outside of their dominant performance in Week 1, Southern Miss allowed 343 rushing yards to Auburn, 213 to UConn, and 281 to Tulane. That could be a recipe for disaster once again Tuesday night against Troy.
Troy running backs Gavin Griffin and Jaheim Merriweather have found success at times through the Trojans’ first four games this season. Griffin is averaging 4.8 yards per carry and leads the team with 259 rushing yards. Merriweather, meanwhile, leads Troy with three rushing touchdowns and 6.0 yards per carry, while his 209 rushing yards rank second on the team behind Griffin.
Just like Southern Miss’ offense, Troy’s offense has been putting up yards this season. One of the biggest problems for the Trojans is that turnovers have been a major issue, which has directly contributed to the team scoring just 27 total points over its last two games.
- Troy vs. Southern Miss Total Pick for Oct. 6: Over 52.5 Points (-110)
