Group A concludes Wednesday’s World Cup slate with South Africa taking on South Korea in Mexico. The group winner has already been decided, with Mexico securing the top spot, but South Korea still has an opportunity to finish second and automatically qualify for the Round of 32. South Africa also remains alive for either a top-two finish or a spot as one of the tournament’s eight best third-place teams, though it seems like an unrealistic possibility.

South Africa was shut out 2-0 by Mexico in its 2026 World Cup opener before earning a 1-1 draw against Czechia last Thursday. Both South Africa and Czechia enter Wednesday tied on one point at the bottom of Group A. South Africa was thoroughly outmatched by Mexico but showed improvement against Czechia, with the now suspended Teboho Mokoena scoring the team’s lone goal on a penalty in the 83rd minute.

South Korea opened the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Czechia thanks to second-half goals from Hwang In-beom and Oh Hyeon-gyu. However, it followed that up with a 1-0 loss to Mexico last Thursday in a match where South Korea arguably played well enough to earn at least a point.

Advancing to the Round of 32 remains a difficult task for South Africa, though it is still mathematically possible. South Korea has a much clearer path forward, especially with a win Wednesday night. A draw or favorable result in the Mexico-Czechia match could also work in South Korea’s favor.

South Africa vs. South Korea Best Bet: Under 2.5 Goals

South Africa has scored just one goal through its first two matches and has not scored more than once in a match since a 3-2 victory over Zimbabwe in Africa Cup of Nations competition on Dec. 29. In its World Cup opener against Mexico, South Africa managed only three shots, two of which were on target. The attack looked more dangerous against Czechia, generating 17 shots and four shots on target, but it still produced just one goal.

South Korea poses a greater scoring threat, but it has scored only twice through two World Cup matches, with both goals coming in its win over Czechia. Against Mexico, South Korea outshot its opponent 9-7 but managed just two shots on target and was unable to find an equalizer.

Neither team has shown a consistent ability to score goals, and even with plenty at stake Wednesday night, a low-scoring match remains the most likely outcome.
