The Tampa Bay Rays (71-46) remain out West and take on the Athletics (47-71) Monday night to open a three-game series at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, California. This is the first of two meetings between the teams this season, as the Rays will host the A’s in Florida in September.

The Rays enter Monday with the best record in the American League and the second-best record in MLB behind only Milwaukee. Tampa Bay has won six games in a row after completing back-to-back sweeps of Colorado and Seattle and is 15-4 since July 20.

The A’s are on the complete opposite end of the standings with the second-worst record in the AL and third-worst overall in the majors. The A’s did, however, snap Boston’s nine-game winning streak with back-to-back victories on Saturday and Sunday, cooling off one of the hottest teams in baseball and entering Monday’s series opener with some momentum. Saturday’s win snapped a nine-game losing streak for the A’s, and this marks the first time they’ve won two consecutive games since June 25-26.

Monday’s series opener in West Sacramento features two starting pitchers with ERAs above 5.00 this season, as A’s left-hander Jacob Lopez (5.64 ERA) battles Rays right-hander Freddy Peralta (5.37 ERA) in what could be a favorable night for both lineups. Peralta made his Rays debut on Aug. 4 following his trade from the New York Mets, but it didn’t go as planned, as the veteran allowed nine hits and seven earned runs in just 3.2 innings against Colorado.
