Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal kick off Tuesday’s World Cup slate with a Group K matchup against Uzbekistan.

Ronaldo has been a major storyline in the soccer world following an underwhelming performance in Portugal’s 2026 World Cup opener, a 1-1 draw against DR Congo last Wednesday. Portugal opened the scoring early on a João Neves header in the sixth minute, but the overall performance left plenty to be desired. Despite boasting the tournament’s highest payroll, led in part by Ronaldo’s salary, and the fifth-most valuable squad in the field, Portugal managed just seven total shots, one shot on target, and five attempts from inside the box.

Ronaldo finished with three shots, none of which were on target, and recorded just 25 touches, the fifth-fewest on the team. The 41-year-old now finds himself well behind in the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot race after stars such as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane have all made significant impacts for their respective nations.

Uzbekistan entered the tournament with far lower expectations and currently sits at the bottom of Group K with zero points following a 3-1 loss to Colombia in its opener. Uzbekistan briefly pulled level in the 60th minute when Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored on a header, but Colombia ultimately proved too strong throughout the match.

Tuesday’s matchup is important for Portugal, which sits tied with DR Congo on one point while looking up at Colombia atop the group with three points.

Portugal vs. Uzbekistan Best Bet: Over 2.5 Goals

Portugal has not scored more than two goals in any of its last five matches dating back to March 28 and showed very little attacking creativity in its 1-1 draw against DR Congo. Still, the talent on this roster is undeniable, and the Portuguese attack has demonstrated its upside before, including a 9-1 victory over Armenia in a UEFA World Cup qualifier on Nov. 16.

On the other side, Uzbekistan has allowed at least two goals in each of its last three matches since June 1, including three against Colombia in its opener. Uzbekistan has also scored in back-to-back matches, which adds another path toward this total.

Colombia generated 15 shots, four shots on target, and 10 attempts from inside the box against Uzbekistan. Those numbers suggest opportunities should be available for Portugal’s attack, particularly if Ronaldo and company are more aggressive after their disappointing opener.

Look for Portugal to deliver a much stronger offensive performance Tuesday afternoon, especially with Ronaldo eager to bounce back after a frustrating start to the tournament.
