spain portugal predictions

The World Cup Round of 16 continues at a blistering pace as Iberian rivals Portugal and Spain meet in Dallas on Monday afternoon with everything on the line. The winner moves on for a quaterfinal date with either the United States or Belgium, and the loser’s summer holiday begins with immediate effect.

41 year-old Cristiano Ronaldo will take the headlines for Portugal as his career-long quest to lift the World Cup trophy continues. Meanwhile, across the field stands Lamine Yamal, the teenage superstar playing in his first World Cup and already carrying the expectations of a nation. While one legend is writing his final chapter, another is just opening the book.

Spain entered the tournament as the betting favorites to lift the trophy, and seem to be growing into the tournament. Portugal, meanwhile, had to survive a tense battle with Croatia on Thursday night to book their place in the Round of 16.

Viewers and bettors alike were treated to an all-timer last night at the Azteca, but this match has the firepower to match it.

Whether you’re backing Spain to justify its status as the betting favorite or Portugal to extend Ronaldo’s World Cup farewell tour, Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook has everything you could want. Moneyline bets, same game parlays, anytime goalscorer bets protected by Super Sub, you name it – here’s everything you need to know before the 3 p.m. ET kickoff at AT&T Stadium – including my Portugal vs Spain predictions and best bets.

Portugal vs Spain Current Odds

This is a knockout round game so one of these teams is going to advance, but the 3-way moneyline remains one of the most popular ways to bet on soccer and is live for this match as well. Remember, with this market you’re betting on the result after 90 minutes (plus stoppage time).

  • 🇵🇹 Portugal to Win: +300
  • 🪢 Tie/Draw: +260
  • 🇪🇸 Spain to Win: -110

Current Odds to Advance: Portugal-Spain

Tie? Who needs it. Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook offers the ‘to advance’ market for all knockout round World Cup fixtures, this one included. By betting a team to advance you’re taking everything out of the betting equation except for the team that moves on. Whether it be a 1-0 win in regulation or a dramatic penalty shootout – if the team you bet moves on, you’re good to go.

  • 🇪🇸 Spain to Advance: +170
  • 🇵🇹 Portugal to Advance: -220

Who’s favored to win, Portugal or Spain?

Based on the current odds, Spain is the betting favorite in this matchup with the -220 price on the ‘to advance’ market. Portugal are a decent underdog at +170.

Using the our sports betting odds calculator the implied probability with those odds of Spain advancing is approximately 69%, with Portugal given a roughly 37% chance to move on.

Spain vs Portugal Predictions

My process begins with a stroll through the Hard Rock Bet Stats Hub to soak up any relevant data, streaks, and betting insights before making my Spain vs Portugal predictions. After marrying that info with my own thoughts on the game, here’s what I’ve got:

Portugal vs Spain Prediction: Mikel Oyarzabal Anytime Goalscorer (+135)

The rationale on this is pretty simple: Mikel Oyarzabal is in good form and scoring goals. Per Stats Hub, the Spanish striker has scored at least once in six of Spain’s last eight World Cup matches (qualifiers included). Spain are favored to win this one, and at +135 odds for a striker as dangerous as Oyarzabal has been, I like it.

Spain vs Portugal Best Bet: Over 2.5 Goals (-135)

This isn’t really a Stats Hub approved play, but more a gut feeling (so take that for what it’s worth) that we’re going to see at least three goals today. Spain haven’t conceded yet in the tournament, but they’ve played Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, a disappointing Uruguay side, and Austria. Portugal will offer a completely different challenge and have the talent – and potentially the motivation if they go behind – to score.

This isn’t purely a gut feeling, though. This match is being played at AT&T Stadium, indoors. So far “Dallas Stadium” has hosted seven games in this World Cup and we’re seeing an average of 3 goals a game. England-Croatia saw six fly in, Netherlands-Japan had four, Argentina-Jordan had four. This won’t be an outdoor scorcher, and I think the chances of this one fizzling out in the heat diminish because of it.
