The Pittsburgh Pirates (58-62) travel to South Florida to take on the Miami Marlins (60-59) Tuesday night for the opener of a three-game series at loanDepot park. The Marlins won the previous series 2-1 when these two teams last met in Pittsburgh in June.

After sweeping Philadelphia and earning a four-game series victory against the New York Mets, the Marlins were swept by Atlanta and then dropped the series opener to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday before picking up back-to-back dominant wins to close out that series ahead of Monday’s off day. Miami has had its ups and downs lately, but it still finds itself in the thick of the National League playoff race, sitting just 3.5 games back of a Wild Card spot entering Tuesday.

The Pirates are also within range of an NL Wild Card spot but have been scuffling since the All-Star break. Pittsburgh has lost five of its last six games and is 8-15 since returning from the break.

Some of Pittsburgh’s struggles can be directly attributed to 2025 NL Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes, who has struggled himself lately, posting a 6.25 ERA across six starts in July and being charged with the loss in his last outing against Milwaukee in his first start of August. Skenes is 9-10 with a 3.96 ERA this season and is set to take the mound Tuesday night against Miami. The Marlins will counter with 23-year-old right-hander Eury Pérez, who had pitched very well since May 22 before taking a loss against Atlanta in his last start, when he allowed seven hits, two walks, and four earned runs over five innings.

Pirates vs. Marlins Odds

Despite Skenes’ recent struggles, Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook lists the Pirates as slight road favorites for Tuesday night’s series opener with the three-time All-Star on the mound:

  • Run Line: Pirates -1.5 (+160), Marlins +1.5 (-170)

Marlins vs. Pirates Best Bet: Eury Pérez Over 6.5 Strikeouts (-105)

Eury Pérez may not be on Jacob Misiorowski’s level when it comes to strikeouts, but he can still generate plenty of punchouts whenever he takes the mound. While Pérez doesn’t qualify to be among the league leaders in certain categories due to missing time earlier this season, his 9.93 K/9 is well above the MLB average of 8.50 this season and would be tied for the 15th-highest rate in the majors so far this year.

Pérez has 121 strikeouts in 109.2 innings across 20 starts in 2026, which comes out to an average of 6.05 strikeouts per start. He’s gone over 6.5 strikeouts in four of his last seven starts, including tying his season high with nine in his previous outing against Atlanta.

On the flip side, the Pirates have struck out more times than any of the other 29 MLB teams this season entering Tuesday’s action. Pittsburgh has also struck out more than any other team in road games this year, and it hasn’t gotten any better lately, as the Pirates have recorded the most strikeouts since the All-Star break.
