Wednesday’s MLB slate features a mix of day and night action, including the series finale between the Philadelphia Phillies (28-27) and San Diego Padres (31-23) at Petco Park. The Phillies are eyeing a three-game sweep and have a legitimate chance to complete it with ace Cristopher Sánchez scheduled to take the mound.

These two teams have had very different seasons so far. The Padres have enjoyed dominant stretches and remain among the best teams in MLB record-wise, sitting just 3.5 games behind the defending back-to-back World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The Phillies, meanwhile, stumbled out of the gate, leading to the firing of former manager Rob Thomson after a 9-19 start, but they have since begun turning things around and climbing back into contention in the National League.

Despite entering Wednesday eight games above .500, the Padres have surprisingly struggled offensively in 2026. San Diego enters the day with the fewest hits in MLB, the league’s lowest batting average and on-base percentage, the second-lowest slugging percentage and OPS, and ranks in the bottom six in RBIs. Star third baseman Manny Machado is batting just .173, while Fernando Tatís Jr. has yet to hit a home run through 53 games this season.

Things won’t get any easier for the Padres lineup with Sánchez taking the mound, but San Diego will look to avoid a sweep at home before heading into its next series against Washington.

Here’s one featured pick from the Stats Hub for Wednesday afternoon’s finale in San Diego:

Phillies vs. Padres Best Bet: Cristopher Sánchez Over 6.5 Strikeouts

It wouldn’t feel right not to highlight Cristopher Sánchez given the way he’s been pitching this season, especially throughout May. The Phillies ace narrowly missed this prop in his last outing against Cleveland, finishing with six strikeouts across another dominant performance.

Sánchez has gone over 6.5 strikeouts in eight of his 11 starts this season and in four of his last five outings. Two of the three times he failed to hit the mark, he finished with exactly six strikeouts. The other was his roughest outing of the year against the Cubs on April 23.

The Padres offense has struggled all season, while Sánchez continues to pitch at an elite level. Those trends could continue Wednesday afternoon in San Diego.

Cristopher Sánchez’s Dominant Stretch

Cristopher Sánchez finished as the 2025 NL Cy Young runner-up after posting a 2.50 ERA with 212 strikeouts across a career-high 202 innings. The left-hander established himself as one of baseball’s premier starters and is proving again in 2026 why he belongs in that conversation.

The Phillies ace enters Wednesday at 5-2 with an NL-leading 1.62 ERA and the third-most strikeouts (86) in MLB. Sánchez also carries an incredible 37.2-inning scoreless streak into Wednesday’s start, the second-longest in Phillies history behind only Grover Cleveland Alexander’s 41-inning streak in 1911.

Sánchez has not allowed a run during the month of May. The last time he gave one up came in the first inning against San Francisco on April 30. Included in his dominant stretch was a complete-game shutout against Pittsburgh two starts ago in which he recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts.

After finishing as the runner-up last season, Sánchez’s dominance in 2026 has made him the favorite to win the NL Cy Young Award at +220 odds at Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook.
