Phillies rookie right-hander Andrew Painter carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning with a 3-0 lead Monday before allowing a walk, a double, and then a two-RBI single by Cardinals first baseman Alec Burleson, which promptly ended Painter’s night after 5.1 strong innings. Philadelphia took a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, but things got dicey when St. Louis scored three runs to cut the deficit to one. However, Alan Rangel was able to stop the damage there before Jonathan Bowlan recorded his first career MLB save to secure the win in the ninth.
Both starting pitchers were excellent Tuesday night, each tossing six shutout innings while allowing only four hits, but the Cardinals managed to take a 1-0 lead in the seventh on an RBI single by Masyn Winn before Everson Pereira added a solo home run in the eighth against the Phillies’ bullpen.
After a dominant performance by 2026 National League Cy Young candidate Cristopher Sánchez on Tuesday night, the Phillies will now hand the ball to another Cy Young candidate in Zack Wheeler on Wednesday afternoon as they try to pick up the series victory. The Phillies’ offense hasn’t been playing up to par through the first two games in St. Louis. While they won 6-5 in Monday’s opener, the offense managed just four hits and scored three runs, only one of which was earned, in five innings against Cardinals starter Hunter Dobbins. Philadelphia recorded eight hits overall, struck out 10 times, and went 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position in that game.
Things didn’t get much better for the Phillies’ offense Tuesday night. Cardinals starter Andre Pallante allowed just four hits and no runs over six innings, and the Phillies recorded only one more hit for the rest of the game while going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position in the 2-0 shutout loss.
As mentioned above, Wednesday’s starter for St. Louis, Kyle Leahy, has been incredible this season and hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last eight starts.
