Penn State heads to Evanston on Friday night for a Big Ten matchup that will double as one of the biggest nights in Northwestern football history.

The Wildcats will officially unveil the brand new Ryan Field, hosting their first game in the stadium exactly 100 years after the original Ryan Field opened. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on FOX, with both teams looking for their first conference win of the season.

Northwestern enters at 2-1 after showing plenty through the first three games of the Aidan Chiles era. The Wildcats opened with a win over South Dakota State before delivering their most impressive performance of the young season against Colorado, rolling to a 41-7 victory in their final game at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.

Chiles was the driving force in that win, completing 17 of 22 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns while adding two more scores on the ground. Northwestern then stepped up in competition at No. 5 Indiana last Friday and stayed in the game until the end, eventually falling 29-23 in Bloomington.

Penn State also comes into Friday night looking to respond to a loss in its Big Ten opener. The Nittany Lions started 3-0 before Wisconsin went into Beaver Stadium last Saturday and shocked everyone with a 24-20 win. Penn State forced three turnovers, including a 51-yard pick-six by Josiah Zayas, but its offense finished with only 233 total yards.

The Nittany Lions remain one of the more talented teams in the Big Ten, but they haven’t looked quite as dominant to begin the post-James Franklin era. Now they have to regroup on the road in a stadium that should have about as much energy as Northwestern can possibly generate for a home game.

There is some recent history between these programs as well. Northwestern stunned Penn State 22-21 at Beaver Stadium last season, snapping a three-game Nittany Lions winning streak in the series. Penn State still holds a 16-6 advantage all-time.

Best Bet for Penn State vs. Northwestern

Northwestern +2.5 (-105): Penn State coming off a bad loss isn’t normally a spot I’d be eager to fade, but Northwestern has shown enough through three games to make getting points at home appealing here.

The Wildcats are 9-6 ATS as a home underdog since 2020, and this year’s team has already given us a couple of reasons to believe it can be competitive against stronger opposition.

The Colorado game was the first real statement. Northwestern completely controlled that matchup in a 41-7 win, forcing turnovers and getting five total touchdowns from Chiles. The Wildcats followed it by going into Bloomington against No. 5 Indiana and staying within striking distance throughout the second half of a 29-23 loss.

Penn State managed to escape their nonconference schedule unbeaten, but the first real Big Ten test ended with Wisconsin beating them at Beaver Stadium. Going against the Nittany Lions immediately after that type of loss is the part that gives me some hesitation. Penn State has the personnel to respond, and this is still a program capable of winning comfortably when everything clicks.

But laying points away from Beaver Stadium hasn’t been especially profitable recently. Penn State is 1-3 ATS as a road favorite dating back to last season, and Friday brings a very unique type of road environment.

This is the first game at the new Ryan Field, under the lights, on national television, against a Big Ten opponent Northwestern beat on the road last season. There probably isn’t going to be another home game on the Wildcats’ schedule that carries quite this much attention or anticipation.

The Wildcats have already shown they can play well against Power Four competition, and the setting alone should give Northwestern every chance to make this a four-quarter game.

I’ll take the points with the home team.
