Week 12 wraps up on Monday night with the Carolina Panthers heading to San Francisco to take on the 49ers, and the spread on Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook has San Francisco favored by seven.
That number feels a little high to me. I expect this game to be much closer — a field-goal difference, not a blowout.
Why This Game Will Be Tighter Than People Think
Carolina’s offense is starting to find its footing. Bryce Young showed real poise in the last game, especially in the fourth quarter, and his chemistry with Tetairoa McMillan continues to grow. Rico Dowdle has taken control of that backfield, emerging as a true RB1 and proving he belongs among the league’s most consistent runners.
San Francisco remains the better team overall, but Carolina has been playing fresher late in games and has the balance to hang around. I expect a tight, high-scoring matchup decided by three points or less.
The Betting Angles
My cohost Mitchell is rolling with the 49ers to both win and cover, and he’s picking Christian McCaffrey to score the first touchdown — a reasonable prop bet given his dominance. He’s also high on Rico Dowdle to find the end zone, and even threw in a bonus pick: Brian Robinson Jr. to score, taking advantage of a Carolina defense that’s already surrendered 13 rushing touchdowns in the red zone this year.
But for me, I’m sticking with the Panthers +7. They’ve been playing good football, and the way Young is developing gives them a real shot to keep this within a possession.
The Brandon Aiyuk Situation
The bigger story in San Francisco isn’t just Monday night’s game — it’s the news surrounding Brandon Aiyuk. Word is, the team and Aiyuk could be parting ways, which would be a stunning turn at this point in the season.
I’m not shocked — I had some insight into how this was developing — but it’s still disappointing to see it reach this stage. A split right now doesn’t help anyone. I’m not blaming Aiyuk or the 49ers, but stepping away this late in the year benefits neither side.
If Aiyuk plays, it helps both him and the team. His production raises his value, whether he stays in San Francisco or ends up elsewhere. Sitting out, on the other hand, only hurts his future — it’s putting pride before the paycheck.
I’ve always believed players should protect their interests, but performing at your best is the best way to do that. Go out, play hard, and show why you’re worth the money — because it helps everyone involved.
Hopefully, Aiyuk gets back on the field soon, reminds everyone of his talent, and puts himself in position to earn what he deserves, whether that’s in San Francisco or somewhere new.
Final Thoughts
The 49ers should win Monday night — they’re the better team — but don’t be surprised if the Panthers keep this close. Carolina’s trending upward, and Bryce Young’s late-game composure gives the underdog a real chance to cover the spread.
