Thursday’s MLB slate begins with day baseball in South Philadelphia as the Phillies (32-29) host the San Diego Padres (32-28) in the series finale. The Phillies have had the Padres’ number this season, first sweeping them in three games last week in San Diego and now looking for another sweep Thursday afternoon, this time at Citizens Bank Park.

Veteran right-hander Aaron Nola battled through five innings in the series opener to keep the Phillies in the game, while the offense did just enough behind Bryce Harper’s two-run home run and Brandon Marsh’s four-hit performance. Philadelphia secured another win Wednesday night thanks in large part to Cristopher Sánchez’s seven dominant innings. Sánchez allowed his first run since April 30, but not before extending his scoreless streak to 50.2 innings, moving into fifth place all-time. He also set records for the longest scoreless inning streak by a left-handed pitcher in MLB history and the longest scoreless streak at Citizens Bank Park.

Lucas Giolito, who allowed four earned runs in 2.2 innings in his last start, will be tasked with trying to salvage the series for San Diego. Meanwhile, veteran right-hander Zack Wheeler and the Phillies are aiming for a perfect 6-0 record against the Padres this season and another sweep.

Padres vs. Phillies Best Bet: Zack Wheeler Under 1.5 Earned Runs

Zack Wheeler is coming off an uncharacteristic outing in which he allowed four earned runs, but he had surrendered just one earned run across 20.1 innings in his previous three starts. Since making his season debut on April 25, Wheeler has allowed fewer than two earned runs in four of his seven starts, including two scoreless outings.

Despite sitting above .500, the Padres rank near the bottom of MLB in multiple offensive categories and enter Thursday with the fewest runs scored in baseball. Through the first five meetings against Philadelphia this season, San Diego has scored just seven runs, five of which were charged to starting pitchers.

There isn’t much margin for error with Wheeler’s line set at 1.5 earned runs, but if he can bounce back from his last outing and continue to benefit from a struggling Padres offense, the under offers strong value at plus money.

Padres vs. Phillies Pitching Matchup: Giolito vs. Wheeler

Lucas Giolito finished the 2025 season with Boston on the injured list and wasn’t signed by the Padres until late April. After building himself up in the minors, Giolito made his season debut on May 17, allowing just one hit across five innings while giving up three earned runs.

Giolito followed that outing with five shutout innings in his second start of the season to earn his second win, but as mentioned above, the former All-Star struggled in his most recent appearance against Washington. The right-hander carries a 4.97 ERA into Thursday and has battled command issues, issuing 12 walks in just 12.2 innings.

The Phillies will counter with Wheeler, who also missed the start of the season while recovering from injury and is likewise coming off a rough outing. The 36-year-old allowed four earned runs against the Dodgers, all on solo home runs, in a game Philadelphia lost 4-2.

Prior to that start, Wheeler looked as dominant as ever despite missing the beginning of the season. He went 4-0 with a 1.67 ERA and 36 strikeouts across his first six starts. He enters Thursday with a 4-1 record, a 2.27 ERA, and 40 strikeouts in 43.2 innings.
