The No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners head to Ann Arbor on Saturday for one of the marquee games of the Week 2 college football slate, visiting the unranked Michigan Wolverines at the Big House. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET on FOX.
The matchup brings together two programs coming off drastically different season openers. Oklahoma made an emphatic first impression with a 51-0 victory over UTEP, while Michigan needed a touchdown with one second remaining to survive Western Michigan, 13-12, in Kyle Whittingham’s debut as head coach.
Oklahoma scored on each of its first eight offensive possessions and finished with 491 total yards against UTEP. Quarterback John Mateer completed 11 of 17 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns, while Isaiah Sategna III piled up 215 all-purpose yards and scored twice. The Sooners were just as sharp defensively. UTEP was held to 198 total yards and never reached the end zone, continuing the form Oklahoma established last season when it led the SEC in scoring defense, total defense and rushing defense.
The Wolverines, on the other hand, trailed Western Michigan 12-7 late in the fourth quarter before Bryce Underwood connected with JJ Buchanan for a 47-yard Hail Mary on the game’s final play. The winning score came after a replay review put one second back on the clock, resulting in a controversial ending to Whittingham’s first game in Ann Arbor.
Saturday also gives Michigan an opportunity to answer last season’s loss in Norman. Oklahoma defeated the Wolverines 24-13 in 2025 behind 344 total yards and three touchdowns from Mateer. The Sooners limited Michigan to 288 yards and held the Wolverines to three conversions on 15 third down attempts.
This will be only the third meeting between the programs and Oklahoma’s first trip to Michigan Stadium. The Sooners have won each of the previous two matchups, including the 1976 Orange Bowl.

Best Bet for Oklahoma vs. Michigan
Michigan +5.5 (-110): Michigan gave bettors plenty of reasons to be skeptical in its opener. The Wolverines entered as a sizable favorite against Western Michigan, generated only 276 yards and needed a controversial replay decision followed by a Hail Mary with one second remaining to avoid a devastating home loss.
That ugly performance has now dramatically changed the price for this matchup.
Michigan was initially listed as a half-point favorite at Hard Rock Bet back in August. Following the Wolverines’ narrow escape and Oklahoma’s 51-point blowout, the Sooners are now favored by 5.5 points – a six-point swing from the original number.
Oklahoma deserves credit for what it did in Week 1, but the question is whether beating UTEP 51-0 while Michigan struggled against Western Michigan should be enough to create such a substantial move.
The Wolverines’ defense at least provided some foundation to build on. Western Michigan scored only 12 points and finished with 221 total yards despite possessing the ball for more than 40 minutes. Michigan will need considerably more from its offense against Oklahoma, but Whittingham has spent much of his career winning games in exactly this type of spot.
Whittingham’s teams have gone 40-26-2 against the spread as underdogs during his head-coaching career. Now he gets nearly a touchdown at home after public perception of his new team took a major hit in its first game.
The Wolverines do not need to suddenly look like a finished product offensively. They simply need their defense to keep the game manageable and Underwood to give them enough production to remain within one score. With six points of movement from the initial line and Whittingham’s lengthy track record of delivering as an underdog, Michigan +5.5 offers an opportunity to buy low on the Wolverines after a turbulent opener.
