New Mexico State and Florida International meet on Wednesday night at Pitbull Stadium as Conference USA takes center stage in Miami. The Aggies already have one league win under their belt, while the Panthers will make their CUSA debut after opening the season with four non-conference games. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
New Mexico State enters at 2-3 overall after beating Western Kentucky 34-13 last Thursday. The victory followed back-to-back losses to Hawaii and rival New Mexico and gave the Aggies their first win over an FBS opponent this season.
James Jones rushed for a career-high 155 yards and a touchdown against Western Kentucky, while Adam Damante made his first start of the season at quarterback. Damante threw for 146 yards and a touchdown and added another score on the ground.
The Aggies also got a much better showing from their defense. After giving up 29 points to Hawaii and 42 to New Mexico, they held Western Kentucky to 13 points in their conference opener.
FIU brings a 2-2 record into its first conference game after splitting its non-conference schedule. The Panthers lost 19-9 at South Florida, responded with a 33-20 win over Buffalo, fell 16-10 at Florida Atlantic and then beat LIU 20-3 in their final game before a bye week.
The Panthers have leaned heavily on their defense through that stretch. No opponent has scored more than 20 points against FIU, with the unit allowing just 58 points across four games.
Wednesday will be the fifth meeting between the programs. The series is tied 2-2 after FIU won the most recent matchup 34-13 in 2024.

New Mexico State vs. FIU Prediction
Under 46.5 (-110): The Panthers are allowing just 14.5 points per game and have yet to surrender more than 20 in a single matchup.
That has resulted in three of FIU’s four games finishing comfortably below Wednesday’s total. The Panthers’ 19-9 loss to South Florida produced only 28 combined points, their 16-10 loss to Florida Atlantic finished with 26 and the 20-3 win over LIU totaled just 23. A 33-20 victory over Buffalo is the only FIU game to clear 46.5 thus far, and it wasn’t by much.
FIU hasn’t been producing a ton on the other side of the ball, either. The Panthers have scored 20 points or fewer in three of four games, with the Buffalo game again serving as the lone exception.
New Mexico State’s results have featured a bit more scoring, but the Aggies are coming off their best defensive showing of the season. Western Kentucky was held to 13 points last Thursday as New Mexico State recorded six sacks and surrendered only 46 yards on the ground.
