The second game of this three-game NL East series between the Miami Marlins (36-37) and Philadelphia Phillies (39-33) kicks off Tuesday’s MLB slate. The Phillies hold the early series advantage after shutting out the Marlins 7-0 in Monday night’s opener.
Philadelphia jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning Monday after a solo home run by outfielder Gabriel Rincones Jr., which happened to be the first hit of his major league career. The Phillies added two more runs in the third inning thanks to an RBI fielder’s choice from Rincones and an RBI single by fellow young outfielder Justin Crawford.
The Marlins were unable to solve veteran right-hander Zack Wheeler in the opener. Wheeler allowed just two hits and struck out nine Miami hitters across six innings. Philadelphia’s bullpen handled the final three innings, while the offense added four more runs, including a two-run home run by veteran catcher J.T. Realmuto in the fifth.
Tuesday’s matchup features a pair of pitchers facing their former organizations. Tyler Phillips made his MLB debut with the Phillies in 2024 and is now set to make his 20th appearance and fourth start of the season for Miami. Phillips owns a 1.86 ERA and tossed five scoreless innings in his last outing against Arizona.
Jesús Luzardo, meanwhile, was acquired by the Marlins from the Athletics during the 2021 season and pitched in Miami through 2024. Philadelphia acquired him in a divisional trade ahead of the 2025 season and later signed him to a five-year, $135 million extension. It has not been an ideal season overall for Luzardo, who owns a 4.35 ERA, but he is coming off a strong outing against Toronto in which he allowed one earned run and struck out eight batters across 5.2 innings.

Marlins vs. Phillies Best Bet: Otto López Over 1.5 Hits
Luzardo is coming off a strong outing in his last start, but he had allowed seven hits in back-to-back starts prior to that. It has been an up-and-down season for the left-hander, and right-handed hitters are batting .281 against him.
One hitter who could take advantage is Otto López, who enters Tuesday leading MLB in both hits (97) and batting average (.339).
López has gone over 1.5 hits in only two of his last five games and was held hitless Monday night. However, he recorded multi-hit performances in five consecutive games from June 6-11, including a three-hit game. López also faced Luzardo in Miami on May 3 and went 2-for-3 against him despite the Marlins’ 7-2 loss.
