In nearly 2,000 combined regular season and postseason games across 23 seasons, LeBron James has never been in this position before. The Los Angeles Lakers open their Western Conference Semifinals series tonight in Oklahoma City as 15.5-point underdogs at Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook – the largest point spread a LeBron-led team has ever entered a game with in his career, regular season or playoffs.

The Lakers are also listed at +900 to win the series at Hard Rock Bet, making this the biggest playoff underdog the franchise has been in nearly four decades. And the numbers backing that line are hard to argue with: the Thunder swept the regular season series 4-0, winning by an average of 29.3 points per game – the largest regular season margin between two opponents from the same conference this year.

Still, writing off LeBron has never been a good bet. He carried LA past a heavily-favored Houston Rockets team in six games in the first round, averaging 26 points, 9 rebounds, and 8.5 assists while Luka Dončić missed the entire series with a grade 2 hamstring strain. Dončić remains out for Game 1, putting the offensive burden squarely on James and a recently-returned Austin Reaves, who made it back from a strained oblique in Game 5 against the Rockets.

On the other side, the defending NBA champion Thunder come in rested after sweeping the Suns in four games, but they won’t be at full strength either. Jalen Williams has been ruled out for Game 1 with a grade 1 hamstring strain suffered in Game 2 against Phoenix, and remains week-to-week. Williams appeared in just 33 regular season games due to injuries this year, but when healthy, he’s one of the best two-way wings in the league. His absence puts more pressure on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and the Thunder’s deep bench to take control of the game.

Best Bet for Lakers-Thunder Game 1

Lu Dort Over 1.5 Three-Pointers (-145): Dort has hit at least 2 or more threes in 11 consecutive games against the Lakers – a streak that spans back across multiple seasons. In the last five meetings alone, he’s knocked down 2, 4, 2, 5, and 3 threes respectively. The Lakers have consistently struggled to contain Dort on the perimeter, and with LA likely focused on limiting SGA and Holmgren, Dort should continue to find open looks from deep. At -145, the juice is worth the squeeze given the streak, the matchup, and the point spread for Game 1 in what projects to be a blowout for OKC at home.
