The WNBA‘s biggest rivalry is about to enter a new chapter. Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark are set to meet for the first time since Reese’s blockbuster offseason trade from Chicago to Atlanta, and the timing couldn’t be any better – Commissioner’s Cup play is underway, and Thursday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse marks Indiana‘s Cup opener.

The Fever (4-4) return home after dropping both games on a two-game West Coast road trip at Golden State and Portland. Saturday’s 100-84 loss to the Fire was a low point – Clark was held to just six points on 1-7 shooting, one of the worst outings of her young career. The Fever are allowing 89 points per game, third-worst in the WNBA, and defense has been the primary focus in practice during the four-day break.

Reese, meanwhile, appears to be thriving in Atlanta. The Dream (6-2) sit just a half-game behind Minnesota for the league’s best record, having won four of their last five – including a 91-75 Commissioner’s Cup win over Connecticut on Tuesday. Reese is averaging a double-double with 13 points and a league-leading 11.3 rebounds per game. But Atlanta’s surge is about more than just Reese. First-team All-WNBA guard Allisha Gray leads the Dream at 21.1 points per game (second in the WNBA), and All-Star wing Rhyne Howard adds 19.3 per game while shooting 40 percent from three.

Thursday’s game features four of the WNBA’s top six scorers: Gray, Kelsey Mitchell (third, 20.6 PPG), Clark (fourth, 20.1 PPG), and Howard. Indiana is the defending Commissioner’s Cup champion, having defeated Minnesota last year to lift the trophy for the first time in franchise history.
