In an NFL season full of surprises, few storylines have been quieter — and yet more compelling — than New England’s rise to the top of the AFC. With a young quarterback playing beyond his years and a head coach redefining a franchise identity, the Patriots suddenly find themselves in position to make a national statement on Monday night. And standing across from them is a Giants team that, despite its record, has developed a reputation for making life difficult for contenders. In this week’s matchup, the stakes are bigger than the standings — it’s about perception, momentum, and proving who belongs in the spotlight. Here’s what we like for Monday night:

Cowherd’s MNF Pick

  • Pick: New England Patriots -7

Every season, the NFL gives us a few games that feel like inflection points — not because they’ll define a Super Bowl run necessarily, but because they reveal how seriously the country should take a contender. For the New England Patriots, sitting there as the number one seed with a second-year quarterback, this week is exactly that.

The Patriots are at home, they’re favored by a touchdown over the Giants, and for Drake Maye and Mike Vrabel, this is the kind of national stage they’ve been strangely absent from. For a team leading the AFC, they’ve been tucked away in the early 1:00 windows like they’re just another regional curiosity.

Right now, New England is the Dunkin’ Donuts of the NFL — absolutely massive in the Northeast, but somehow not getting traction nationally. This game is their chance to step out of the regional spotlight and plant a flag on a big stage.

It’s a flex game for Vrabel. It’s a showcase for Maye. And it’s a chance for the Patriots to say, “Hey, we’re legitimately one of the best teams in football.”

That’s why I’m taking New England to win and to cover the spread. This is their moment, and great teams — especially ones with great coaching — typically seize these standalone opportunities.

Middlekauff’s MNF Pick

  • Pick: NY Giants +7

Look, I’m with Colin on the outcome: I think New England wins the game. But there’s an element here that can’t be ignored, and it’s why I’m taking the Giants with the points.

The Mike Kafka–led Giants have been frisky. They very easily could’ve beaten the Lions. This isn’t a team waving the white flag on December football.

Here’s the thing about primetime games late in the season: For teams out of the playoff picture, these matchups become their Super Bowl. They get up for it. They throw the kitchen sink at you. And even bad teams can look awfully dangerous when the lights come on and the country is watching.

Seven points is just a lot, especially when the underdog has some momentum, some juice, and frankly — nothing to lose.

The Patriots should win. They’re better. They’re more stable. But don’t be shocked if this one feels tighter than New England fans would like. The Giants can be annoying — and I mean that in the most competitive way possible.
