The series finale between the Atlanta Braves (34-16) and Miami Marlins (22-28) takes place Thursday night at loanDepot park in Florida. The Marlins made a statement with a dominant win in the series opener, but the Braves responded with consecutive victories to put themselves in position for a series win Thursday night.

Miami opened the four-game series with a 12-0 shutout victory, but Atlanta showed why it owns the best record in the National League over the next two games. The Braves rallied for an 8-4 comeback win Tuesday afternoon before cruising to a 9-1 victory Wednesday night behind seven strong innings from Chris Sale and two three-run home runs from Austin Riley and Dominic Smith.

Thursday night’s finale features two pitchers with injury histories but elite talent when healthy. Spencer Strider is set to start for Atlanta with the series on the line, while 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcántara takes the mound for Miami.

Here are two featured picks for the matchup:

Braves vs. Marlins Best Bet: Xavier Edwards Over 0.5 Hits

Xavier Edwards has enjoyed plenty of success since debuting with Miami in 2023, and the 26-year-old is putting together another strong season in 2026.

Edwards is slashing .317/.398/.489 entering Thursday and is riding a six-game hitting streak that includes three multi-hit performances. The Marlins second baseman is tied for the second-most hits in MLB behind only teammate Otto López. He is also riding an impressive 17-game streak of recording at least one hit at home against NL East opponents.

The -250 odds for Edwards to record a hit may not be appealing on their own, but it could be worth considering as part of a parlay. Just remember that parlays also increase risk.

  • Braves vs. Marlins Player Prop Pick for May 21: Xavier Edwards Over 0.5 Hits (-250)

Braves vs. Marlins Moneyline Pick: Braves -140

This one is fairly straightforward. The Braves enter Thursday with the most wins in baseball and the best record in the National League.

Although Sandy Alcántara has pitched well this season, Atlanta simply has the deeper and more dangerous lineup. That offensive firepower was on full display Wednesday night, when eight of the Braves’ 10 batters recorded at least one hit. Three players had multi-hit games, two players homered, and four different hitters drove in runs.

If the moneyline odds don’t offer enough value, the Braves’ run line is also worth considering at plus money if you believe Atlanta can win by multiple runs.

Braves vs. Marlins Pitching Matchup: Strider vs. Alcántara

Spencer Strider appeared well on his way to becoming one of the best starting pitchers in baseball early in his career. After debuting late in the 2021 season, Strider finished as the runner-up for NL Rookie of the Year in 2022 after posting a 2.67 ERA across 31 appearances, including 20 starts.

He followed that up with an All-Star selection and a fourth-place finish in 2023 NL Cy Young voting after going 20-5 with a 3.86 ERA and an MLB-leading 281 strikeouts across 32 starts. Unfortunately, after making just two starts in 2024, Strider suffered a UCL injury that required elbow surgery and sidelined him for the remainder of the season and part of 2025.

After returning in 2025, Strider later suffered a hamstring injury that limited him to 23 starts during a down year. The 27-year-old also missed the beginning of the 2026 season with an oblique injury before returning May 3. He is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA and 18 strikeouts through his first three starts this season.

Sandy Alcántara is another pitcher whose career has been impacted by injuries despite elite talent. The Marlins ace is a two-time All-Star and won the 2022 NL Cy Young Award after leading MLB in bWAR and innings pitched while also recording six complete games.

Alcántara appears to be regaining his ace form in 2026. The 30-year-old owns a 3.53 ERA through his first 10 starts and tossed a complete-game shutout against the Chicago White Sox on April 1.
