The Houston Astros and San Francisco Giants continue their three-game set on Tuesday night at Oracle Park, with Houston looking to build on an extra-inning victory in Monday’s series opener.
Houston rallied for a 6-3 win in 10 innings after entering the ninth trailing 3-2 and getting down to its final strike. Cam Smith delivered the game-tying hit before Jeremy Peña put the Astros ahead in the 10th and Isaac Paredes provided some insurance with a two-run double.
The win moved Houston to 61-59 and kept the Astros atop the AL West, a half-game ahead of the Texas Rangers. San Francisco, meanwhile, has dropped three straight games and enters tonight’s game at 49-70, sitting fourth in the NL West.
Tuesday’s pitching matchup features Hunter Brown for Houston going up against left-hander Carson Whisenhunt for San Francisco. Brown enters at 3-1 with a 3.53 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 63 strikeouts over 58.2 innings. Whisenhunt has had a much more difficult start to his major-league season, going 2-3 with a 7.25 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 20 strikeouts across 22.1 innings.

Varsho will get his first look at Carson Whisenhunt, who has struggled mightily overall in his first five starts. The Giants left-hander owns a 7.25 ERA and has allowed 26 hits and 18 earned runs over 22.1 innings, with opponents batting .292 against him. However, Whisenhunt has been considerably better at Oracle Park, where he has a 5.06 ERA and .211 opponent batting average, compared to a 9.26 ERA and .353 opponent average on the road.
The platoon split is even more notable for the left-handed Varsho. Lefties have gone just 2-18 against Whisenhunt this season, with no extra-base hits and a .111/.333/.111 slash line. Right-handed hitters have had far more success, batting .338 and slugging .606 against the rookie.
Whisenhunt’s overall numbers are shaky, but his home and lefty splits make this a more interesting matchup than his 7.25 ERA suggests. With Varsho hitting .120 through his first seven games in Houston and staying under this number in eight of his last 10 overall, under 1.5 hits + runs + RBI is our Stats Hub best bet for Tuesday night.
