Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech put their perfect records on the line Friday night in Blacksburg in a matchup that is historic for a rather unusual reason.

Both teams enter at 4-0, yet neither has cracked the AP Top 25. The matchup is believed to be the first in modern major-college football history between two unranked 4-0 teams from major conferences, giving Friday night’s ACC showdown a distinction neither program probably expected to hold when the season began.

Kickoff from Lane Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

For Virginia Tech, being unbeaten a month into the season represents a dramatic change from where the program stood a year ago. The Hokies finished 3-9 in 2025 before hiring James Franklin, ending his 12-year run at Penn State and bringing an experienced head coach to Blacksburg to lead the rebuild. Four games into his first season, Virginia Tech has already surpassed last year’s win total.

The Hokies opened the Franklin era with a 73-3 win over VMI and followed it with victories over Old Dominion and Maryland. Last weekend brought a much different test, as Virginia Tech erased an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat Boston College 21-14 and move to 4-0 for the first time since 2017. Another win Friday would give Virginia Tech its first 5-0 start since 2005.

Pitt has matched that perfect start behind a defense that has been one of the toughest in the country to score against. Pat Narduzzi’s Panthers have surrendered just 34 points through four games, holding every opponent to 14 or fewer while allowing only 8.5 points per game.

Quarterback Mason Heintschel has supplied plenty of production on the other side of the ball, throwing for 1,191 yards, 13 touchdowns and only one interception. His six-touchdown performance against Bucknell last week made him the first ACC quarterback to record multiple six-touchdown passing games in the same season.

There is history between these programs beyond their matching records. Pitt and Virginia Tech were regular opponents during their Big East days, and the all-time series could hardly be tighter after 23 meetings, with the Hokies holding a 12-11 advantage.

Now the former Big East opponents meet again with matching 4-0 records, an early edge in the ACC race at stake and Franklin looking to keep his unbeaten start at Virginia Tech rolling under the lights at Lane Stadium.

Pitt vs. Virginia Tech Best Bet

Virginia Tech -2.5 (-115): There isn’t much separating two 4-0 teams that have yet to prove they belong among the ACC’s best, which makes the setting Friday night hard to ignore.

Pitt has controlled this series for much of the past 25 years, going 10-5 straight up against Virginia Tech since 2001, but Blacksburg has been a different story. The Panthers are just 3-8 all-time at Lane Stadium, and the home team has won six of the last eight meetings overall.

This also isn’t a routine trip to Blacksburg. Pitt spent the entire first month of the season at Acrisure Stadium, and its first road game comes on a Friday night in front of a sold-out Lane Stadium crowd of more than 65,000.

For Virginia Tech, it’s the first ACC home game of the James Franklin era and a chance to reach 5-0 for the first time since 2005. Franklin has made the importance of the home crowd a point of emphasis this week, and this is the first real showcase game in Blacksburg since he took over the program.

Pitt is good enough defensively to keep this close, which is exactly why I like getting Virginia Tech laying under a field goal. In a series that has recently favored the home team, I’ll back Virginia Tech to take advantage of Pitt’s first trip away from home and win by at least 3 or more points.
