For the first time in the modern history of the competition, the Leagues Cup semifinals are made up entirely of Liga MX clubs. Club América and CF Monterrey will wrap up Wednesday’s doubleheader at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, with a place in the championship match at stake. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 p.m. ET on Apple TV.
Leagues Cup play began with 36 clubs from Liga MX and Major League Soccer, but América, Monterrey, Toluca and León are the four teams still standing. Wednesday’s winner will advance to face either Toluca or León in the final on Sunday, September 6. Reaching the final would also secure one of the tournament’s three available places in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup.
América arrives in California without a regulation loss across its first 10 matches between the Liga MX Apertura and Leagues Cup. Las Águilas lead the domestic table with 16 points from six matches and have advanced this far by producing three wins and one draw in regulation during the international tournament.
Monterrey’s route to the semifinals has followed a remarkably consistent pattern: each of its four Leagues Cup matches has ended 2-1. Rayados lost their opener to Orlando City but recovered with wins over Inter Miami and Nashville SC before eliminating the Chicago Fire in the quarterfinals.
Víctor Guzmán headed Monterrey in front against Chicago, and Orbelín Pineda broke a second-half tie with the winning goal in the 83rd minute. The result extended Monterrey’s Leagues Cup winning streak to three matches, although its form in Liga MX has been less convincing.
Monterrey has now lost two straight league games by a combined score of 5-1, including Sunday’s 3-1 home defeat to Atlético de San Luis. Hugo Cuypers scored Monterrey’s only goal in that loss and remains one of its leading threats after finding the net in all three of the club’s Phase One matches in Leagues Cup play.
Wednesday will mark the first Leagues Cup meeting between the two Mexican powers. América earned a 1-0 victory when they last faced each other in Liga MX in February, and recent history has generally been competitive with each club recording multiple wins across the past five meetings.
