An AL East matchup with a significant storyline headlines Monday’s MLB slate as the Baltimore Orioles (49-51) take on the Boston Red Sox (50-48) at Fenway Park to open a three-game divisional series. This marks the third meeting of the season between the two clubs, with the season series tied at three games apiece.

While the Orioles have hovered around the .500 mark all season, Baltimore hasn’t had a winning record since improving to 9-8 on April 14. However, the O’s may be poised to make a second-half push to stay in the American League playoff race, currently riding a seven-game winning streak and sitting just two games out of an AL Wild Card spot.

A seven-game winning streak is impressive, but the Red Sox are doing something even more remarkable. Boston has won 13 consecutive games, tying the second-longest winning streak in franchise history and moving within two victories of the club record of 15 straight wins, set in 1946. It has been a complete turnaround for the Red Sox, who fired former manager Alex Cora earlier in the season after a 10-17 start. Boston has since climbed to within six games of first-place Tampa Bay in the AL East and currently holds the final AL Wild Card spot.

Orioles right-hander Shane Baz will look to put together a strong outing Monday night in an effort to snap Boston’s 13-game winning streak, while Red Sox rookie left-hander Payton Tolle and his 3.11 ERA will try to extend the streak to 14 games.

Red Sox vs. Orioles Best Bet: Red Sox Moneyline (-160)

Both Boston and Baltimore enter Monday’s series opener on winning streaks, but the Red Sox have more momentum as they chase franchise history. It’s also worth noting that these teams have been evenly matched through their first two series this season, with each club winning one series and the season series tied 3-3.

The Red Sox also have home-field advantage and appear to hold the edge on the mound with Tolle getting the start. Tolle tossed six shutout innings against Baltimore in a win on June 3 and is carrying some momentum of his own after getting married during the All-Star break.

Boston has also won 14 consecutive games against American League opponents.
