The San Antonio Spurs’ first round playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers has taken a dramatic turn heading into Game 3. The Spurs looked to be in control following their 111-98 Game 1 win, with Victor Wembanyama erupting for 35 points in his postseason debut. But Game 2 flipped the script entirely after Wembanyama went down with a concussion in the second quarter. Portland stormed back from a 14-point fourth quarter deficit, closing on an 11-2 run for a 106-103 win that evened the series at one game apiece.

In Game 2 without Wemby, the Spurs actually outscored Portland by four points across 37 minutes before collapsing late. Stephon Castle led San Antonio with 18 points and De’Aaron Fox added 17, while Devin Vassell chipped in 16 points and 12 rebounds but missed a potential game-tying three with two seconds left.

For Portland, Scoot Henderson has been the biggest riser of the series. After an 18-point performance in Game 1, he exploded for 31 in Game 2 on blistering 11-of-17 shooting. Deni Avdija has been productive per usual, putting up 30 points and 10 rebounds in Game 1, followed by 14 in Game 2, while Holiday’s 16 points and nine assists helped orchestrate the comeback. The Blazers will now look to ride the energy of their first home playoff game since 2021 tonight at the Moda Center.

Is Victor Wembanyama Playing in Game 3?

Victor Wembanyama’s status for Game 3 remains up in the air, as the Spurs have listed him as questionable while he continues working through the NBA’s concussion protocol. The 2025-26 Defensive Player of the Year traveled with the team to Portland on Thursday, which is a positive sign, but still has multiple steps to clear before doctors will allow him back on the court.

Head coach Mitch Johnson noted that Wembanyama is improving, though he declined to offer a firm return date, emphasizing that final clearance must come from an independent league physician. Wemby has been around the team in recent days and even participated in light shooting, another encouraging step in his recovery. Still, concussion protocol requires a multi-stage process – including conditioning work and medical evaluations – before a player can return.

Based on recent NBA precedent, the average recovery window for concussions has been roughly 7-10 days, which would point more toward a Game 4 return on Sunday.
